rwec > So this is Iceland. Lots of water, mountains, and geothermal energy. The steam in the distance is a geothermal powerplant.
rwec > The airline lost our luggage. And because we arrived at 6:30am, we couldn't check into our hotel til the afternoon. What to do??? Let's get in a van and go for a drive...
rwec > ...to here: Þingvellir National Park, maybe an hour outside of Reykjavik. (It's prounced "Thingviller"). A bit of background first. The Earth has a bunch of tectonic plates. They move around. When they collide, they often cause earthquakes. When they pull apart, they form canyons. At Þingvellir, the North American and European tectonic plates are pulling apart about 1/2 an inch a year. They've been pulling apart for quite some time now, and have formed a canyon. The canyon has filled with glacial meltwater. 34 degree Farenheight glacial meltwater. Hey, I know: Let's go SCUBA diving in it!
rwec > As the airline lost our luggage, Erik borrowed the divemaster's spare long johns as a base layer. Did we mention the water is 34 degrees?
rwec > Then Erik squeezed into a drysuit, feeling much like a sausage probably does when put into its casing.
rwec > Next Erik put on an air tank and BC. Pretty important, that.
rwec > Two other people were as crazy as Erik: Keith, from the UK, and Ben, a lawyer from Chicago. Turns out Ben and Erik worked for the same law firm for a few years, Ben in Chicago, Erik in DC. Small world.
rwec > There's Erik, bringing up the rear. For future reference, note the yellow tank with one strap running horizontally across it. That's the easiest way to identify Erik in the drysuit.
The dive site is called Silfra.
rwec > North America is on the right; Europe is on the left. And Erik's gonna dive right in the middle.
So this is Iceland. Lots of water, mountains, and geothermal energy. The steam in the distance is a geothermal powerplant.
